Mental Health
The Department of Mental Health at Mount Meru Regional Referral Hospital operates under Medical Directorate. We are dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate outpatient care for individuals suffering from psychological, psychiatric, neuropsychiatric, and addiction disorders without special needs.
Our department also offers rehabilitation services, including psychosocial interventions such as individual, couple, family, or group psychotherapy, occupational therapy, and multidisciplinary team resolution of social problems. We take a family-centered approach to ensure support throughout the course of treatment.
Our staff is highly empathetic and passionate about providing care to mental health patients. We welcome students who come to our department for clinical field practicums.
Our two outpatient clinics follow the Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to deliver the highest quality of healthcare services.
MEDICATED ASSISTED THERAPY (MAT)
- This department functions as an outpatient clinic, assisting individuals struggling with opioid addiction through the use of Methadone as an alternative medication under direct observable therapy (DOT).
- The clinic strictly adheres to the guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) set forth by the Tanzania Ministry of Health (MOH) in collaboration with the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority.
- Services are offered throughout the week, from Monday to Sunday, and the clinic collaborates with five esteemed community support organizations (CSOs): YCR, YOVARIBE, DARO, CARE FOR ALL, and KIMARA PEER. These CSOs play a crucial role in identifying clients within the communities, educating them about drug cessation, raising awareness about treatment options, and explaining treatment regulations for approximately two weeks. Subsequently, they escort the clients to the MAT clinic to commence treatment.
MENTAL HEALTH CLINIC
The mental health clinic provides outpatient mental health care and therapeutic as well as psychological counseling services to clients. Our services are available from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
Our Services
We have a team of qualified and experienced professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and occupational therapists, who are dedicated to providing high-quality mental health care services to those in need.
Upon arrival, patients’ vital signs are checked and recorded. They are then seen by a doctor who will order any necessary investigations and prescribe medication.
The psychotherapy services are done by psychologist at the clinic setting to the appropriate clients by cash only per session
Quarterly seminars are held at the mental health department to educate patients, relatives, guardians, and staff on how to manage mental illness and raise awareness of mental health issues.
Patients complete a consent form and are assigned a unique Medical Aid Treatment (MAT) number. Their treatment file is then prepared.
Nursing services include communicable and non-communicable screening checkups, care testing and counseling services (CTC), urine toxicology tests using Urine Drug Screening (UDS) to detect substance abuse, and wound dressing
Social welfare services encompass psychosocial support, legal support, gender-based violence (GBV) intervention services, and health education provision.
All methadone clients receive training sessions twice a week.
