The Mount Meru Regional Referral Hospital has officially launched a four-day specialist medical camp to provide free specialist medical treatment to residents of Arusha Region in support of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan's efforts to improve the country's health sector and to mark the 63rd anniversary of Independence.
Speaking at the hospital grounds today, December 6, 2024, the Hospital's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Alex Ernest, urged Arusha residents to come to the hospital wherever they are to receive medical services without paying anything.
He said that in the camp, more than 30 specialist doctors from Mount Meru Hospital will be present until the completion of the exercise on December 9, 2024, they expect a total of 4000 residents of Arusha city to be able to receive specialist treatment if an average of 1000 patients will be treated per day.
“We announce to all residents of Arusha suffering from various diseases to come to the hospital here to get free treatment, they will be able to see specialist doctors and be served with high-quality care,” he said.
He said that patients who will have to undergo surgery will be admitted and given the service for free at the hospital but those who will have to be referred will have to pay for it when they are transferred because free services are only available at Mount Meru Hospital.
Dr. Ernest said that more than 15 services will be provided through these specialist doctors including maternal and child services, urinary system diseases, mouth including nose and ears, teeth, eyes, skin, diabetes, bone services, pathology, non-communicable diseases such as cancer, blood pressure, etc.
He also said that non-communicable diseases have been a major challenge in the country because victims have been discovering that they have them when the disease has spread widely due to the lack of a habit of regular health checks.
“Through this camp, we will also be providing education to patients regarding their lifestyle in order to be able to change their lifestyle which has been causing many non-communicable diseases,” he said.
Dr. Ernest concluded by explaining that the camp has been brought in to want citizens to see for themselves how the government has invested in the health sector in the country by making major revolutions including the purchase of modern laboratory equipment.
